The Doctor’s Order – GH

gourmez3By Becca

Time for another month’s worth of catch-up on General Hospital! That’s how it goes these days. I end up binge watching two weeks’ worth at a time, through my tag-team of Windows Media Player and Hulu Plus, and then hope I have time to get a column written once I’m done. So what do I think is the biggest missed opportunity since June? The most entertaining plot line? Even the potential for a show-wide theme? Read on!

You know those dead-weight characters? The ones you’re 90% sure are around only to be eye candy and never to play a central role in a storyline? Well, I was convinced Jordan Ashford was one of those characters. My disinterest in her quickly shifted to outright loathing once she took on overseeing the drug shipments for the Jeromes. Another mobster? Please, like we need one of those. So when the twist that Jordan is a DEA agent was revealed, well, a smile broke out on my face, wide and happy.

The biggest story on General Hospital continues to be Evil Luke, or EviLuke as I now dub him. Sorry, folks, but I’m not calling him Fluke. I have soap-fan PTSD from that time Luke and Felicia slept together while working on Lila’s memoirs, and Fluke is a term I need never hear again to preserve my sanity. We don’t want to return to those dark days, not even in portmanteaus.

I’m saddened that Morgan and Ava’s love affair appears over. Has there been a character on this show as explosively self-damaging since Carly 1.0 blew into town? This time last year, Morgan himself was on that path, but somehow, dating his ex-wife’s mother seemed to give him stability. But Ava, Ava–anything and everything wrong, she does it, and I’m never sure what that wrong is going to be until it happens.

Reflecting back on a month’s worth of General Hospital at a time gives me an interesting perspective. In the week-to-week viewing, the plots can feel like they’re moving too slow and my interest wanes, which was the case after Lulu and Dante learned Britt’s baby was theirs—I couldn’t bring myself to care about the kidnapping afterward at all. But then we get several shows in a row that all grab my interest, and this last week has been one of those, from the rock-music-backed sexing of Ava and Sonny to Carlos’s wide-eyed anger that Sabrina had (maybe) been targeted. But what had me most on edge is “Luke Spencer”. I use those quotes because he is assuredly not Luke Spencer.

So what else has happened in the last month of General Hospital? Robin’s left town again, Brad found himself in a romantic triangle, AJ found out who really shot Connie and promptly got shot himself, and Ric Lansing slithered his way back into town. What’s next, a return of Casey the Alien?

Another month has passed since my last column. Carly was rescued, Luke was possibly brainwashed, Ric Lansing came back to town, Robin left town, Anna continued to deflect suspicions about Faison’s death, and Sonny tried not to take as much delight in shooting AJ as he wanted to. Most importantly, though, we still don’t know whether Emma wants Spencer or Cameron more!

While I’m still digesting the hilarious pairing of Victor Cassadine and Dr. Obrecht, enjoying how much more exciting jail scenes are when suspects can talk to each other through their bars, and wondering why anyone would ever want to bring Jason Morgan back, let’s talk a bit about secrets. Bobbie tried to keep Lucas’s father a secret, Sabrina caved on keeping her own secret after a few weeks, and Felicia is attempting to keep Lucy’s affair with Scotty a secret. Perhaps Felicia should learn from the first two?

Yet again, the mob has taken over General Hospital. Morgan’s caught in a battle of loyalties between the Jeromes and his father. Olivia’s throwing her weight around to support Sonny. Both Lucas and Brad discovered their fathers are mob heads—seriously, Brad’s dad too? Where did that even come from? But at least the show is delving into the weightier matter of living in constant violence. That’s especially apparent in Duke’s story, which came to a heartbreaking apex on Tuesday.

So we’re in a mob war on General Hospital. Did I miss 2014 and end up back in 2011, the last time there was a mob war in town? It was the Balkan then, and if you don’t remember him, then, well, you’re blessed enough to probably have forgotten most of Brenda Barrett’s last stay in town. I wish I had your memory, though I’ve discovered my own selective one is becoming quite handy these days. For instance, there’s something familiar about Scotty being scorned by his old friend and lover, Lucy Coe, in favor of her one true love, something about the same thing happening to him with another old love just this summer…maybe someone he was married to? It’s all very fuzzy, but it’s sure easier to enjoy the show that way.

This column originally had a heartfelt introduction about how traumatic the Baby Connie custody battle has been. That heartfelt introduction still exists; it’s just coming later in the column because I watched Monday’s episode of General Hospital and I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as hard at this show as I did when Juan Santiago showed up with a dress for his cousin Sabrina.

What a difference two weeks makes! There’s been genuine forward momentum in each of General Hospital’s current storylines, so much so that I’ll need two columns to talk about it all! In this one, I cover the small but sure steps a couple of relationships have taken. The show may have found a way for me to enjoy Franco, and I can feel myself investing in Alexis and Derek already. But that’s not all my friends. For the first time since Lucky, I find myself enjoying one of Sam’s relationships. That’s a miracle in and of itself.

I’m a week behind in my GH viewing, so apologies if none of this is pertinent anymore…but let’s be real. It’s still a soap opera; I can’t have missed that much forward momentum, right? I never knew I wanted Cesar Faison dressed as Beetlejuice for Halloween, but oh, oh, I did. It’s like the Powers that Be looked deep into my ridiculous soul and crafted him just for me.

General Hospital became an action flick last week with women in the role of kick-ass hero, and I loved it! Our writers get that you can’t have a Scorpio storyline without scenes that hanker back to GH’s glory days of ridiculous spy stories. They get that linking Luke’s kidnapping and poisoning with Cesar Faison and Jerry Jacks makes for a wide-ranging storyline that affects nearly the whole canvas. They get that Robin doesn’t have to have spy training to fight her way out of a situation, but using her brain is just as effective. And I’ve enjoyed every second of this plot, even the ones that hurt.
