Newsflash — GH — BOB GUZA IS OUT!

By the Gourmez

Boy, it pays to be a Twitter user.  Merry Christmas in mid-May folks. Bob Guza has been fired, effective immediately. Garin Wolf, a longtime writer on General Hospital, will be taking over the Head Writer position. I honestly thought we would see the show cancelled before we ever saw this happen. I feel giddy about GH for the first time in months. The Soap Opera Network is the first one up with the press release:

– ABC’s “General Hospital” has announced that effective immediately Garin Wolfwill replace outgoing Robert Guza Jr. as its head writer. The announcement was made by Brian Frons, President, Daytime, Disney/ABC Television Group.

“Garin is a talented writer and storyteller who has been a part of the ‘General Hospital’ family for nearly 15 years,” said Frons. “His in-depth knowledge and adoration for the show’s legacy will help make a smooth transition and an immediate impact on story,” said Frons. “I’m sure he will succeed in taking ‘General Hospital’ to new heights as he develops characters and storylines that will engage and thrill our viewers.”

I’ll be updating with actor reactions from Twitter as they come in. Here are the first few:

Nancy Lee Grahn: Guza Out!!! and also …Garin Wolf was one of the writers that did outlines for the show before the strike and they were terrific! You’ll love him.

Laura Wright: Wow changing times at GH. Congrats Garin !!!

Jason Thompson: Well it’s official. Bob Guza is no longer our GH head writer. Welcome Garin Wolf! Pretty crazy. and also To all asking..It’s change. I like change, looking forward to it. I would encourage u to use your voice, write, call, email, tweet..

Kirsten Storms: craaaaazy!! and she retweeted Jason Thompson’s first remarks.

Ingo Rademacher: Bob Guza is done as head writer of GH. Thanks for a great 15 yrs Bob. Good luck to u in the future. and also Welcome Garin Wolf as new head writer of GH. Garin has been a writer on the show for many years and I’m sure will do a great job. Congrats!

Cocktails are on me. Please have one, or several, in the comments to celebrate.

    YAHOOOOOOOO!!! There is a God!!!!!!!

I think I would like to know why NOW? Like… People have been complaining for YEARS to fire this dude.. The ratings have been CONSISTANTLY going down for years… I want to know what made them say “okay, TODAY is the day we fire him.”

Thanks so much for this story. There was absolutely NO hope for S&B being married w/ idiot Guza being the headwriter… NOW There IS hope for S&B AFTER ALL!!! Not saying they will live happily ever after, I just think maybe they will have a NORMAL marriage now.. A lot of things have not made sense since they’ve been married… Now hopefully, there will be a realistic story to the S&B relationship.

Maybe I won’t fall asleep during the daytime while I’m looking at GH I hope change is good

Maybe now i’ll start watching it again!!! Im so excited and I was a HUGE GH DIE-HARD FAN!!!!!! On the edge of my seat when it was 5 till couldnt wait till the next day and couldnt wait to Mondays. HE KILLED GH he really did with all his stupidness and I TRUELY HOPE that the show will be as it once was….A GREAT SHOW!!

BYE GUZA YOU WON’T BE MISSED!!!!!!!!!!!

Mai Tai’s for both of you, friends! Anitra, I have shared your worries about Sonny and Brenda’s marriage–I hope shifting story lines will somehow save this marriage of two people who haven’t changed at all in a decade apart–they should both have matured and neither is showing it lately! Kim, we are all hoping for that–this sweeps period has had absolutely nothing interesting going on except for Robin and Patrick reconnecting.

  4. GRATEFULDEAD714 says:

Thank God that ABC is FINALLY shaking up the awful writing on G.H. How sad is it that I watch the show by reading the newspaper just waiting for something interesting for me to put the paper down and actually watch the show. The Nicholas and Emily story was the real downward spiral of the show. It’s been so awful for so long and any change has to be better than the mess they produce 5 days a week.

Now maybe GH won’t get canceled by ABC after all……

  5. GRATEFULDEAD714 says:

Emily’s dead and only Nicholas can see her??

Lame. Same as Tracy only being able to see Alan.

    CHANGE IS GOOD…….

  6. Joanna says:

Yeah! Hoping he’s not here to tie things up for the end like LB on AMC. Maybe pod Brenda & Sonny will be fixed soon.

  7. Jammie says:

This is good news. Maybe we’ll at least get to see more of the Q’s. I doubt this will help the Brenda and Sonny storyline unless VMG decides not to leave. Maybe she’ll leave and take Sonny with her. I like Sonny, but this show has just become so boring. Almost as boring as AMC. Kim, I thought I was the only one who fell asleep during GH every day. Sometimes I rewind to see what I missed, but it’s usually nothing.

  8. Mary says:

I can understand why a few of the actors aren’t jumping for joy. Guza has been responsible for a LOT of storylines that any sane writer would have never thought of, let alone written. Some actors (who will remain nameless in this comment) will be very unhappy to see their mob boss go, I’m sure. Personally, I believe it couldn’t happen soon enough, and it proves that bad things can happen to bad people, too!

  9. The Gourmez says:

Cosmopolitans for all of you, with an extra squeeze of lime! I’m not getting my hopes up that GH isn’t on its ways to cancellation, but if it is, at least it’ll be someone new at the top, hopefully making better use of the time it has left. Imagine seeing more Qs, maybe some fun returns to say goodbye if nothing else, or heck, just not having the same 5-6 people onscreen every day.

  10. Samlexis fan says:

I am jumping for joy!!! Guza the LUZA is out…yea!!!!

I’ve been hoping for this for years. I hated the way he wrote for most of the female characters on GH.

I hope we see more of the family relationships (Samlexis and Davis girls are my fave). And I hope we see some female bonding and friendships among the cast of characters in Port Chuck-:)

I also hope we get to see more of the vets and all the characters we actually care about. I have been sick to death of the “Brenda Hour” for months now! And who the heck cares about Abby and Siobhan???

RIP Guza…you really sucked as head writer!

  11. [...] you haven’t sauntered over to the Bob Guza’s Out celebration thread yet, make sure you do and I’ll make you a [...]

  12. Mary says:

Samlexis fan – agree on everything but your last sentence. WHY should Guza RIP? I want him on a slow spit in hell…or – oh, I’ve got it!!!! He can write for the ‘CHEW’! Within 6 weeks he’ll have Mario Batalli taking out a hit on Michael Symon and have Carla whatever her name is blown up in a limo! Not that I’ll watch it, but it’d still be fun knowing he’s trying to write for those…cooks! And yeah, I find them guilty by association.

  13. Cherryames says:

I have to agree with the Gourmez that this is not necessarily good news. I see it as a cost cutting measure, and maybe as Guza jumping off a sinking ship. Also, AMC and OLTL changed head writers before they were cancelled, so… Here’s hoping we’re wrong.

  14. The Gourmez says:

A deliciously feminine cocktail for you, Samlexis–the French Kiss. I’ve never considered myself much of a feminist, not feeling terribly oppressed in my own life, but even I can’t deny how downtrodden GH’s women are. All they do is get victimized over and over again. For Mary, a blended Grasshopper so you can forget all your troubles–while I’m stoked Guza’s gone, roasting in hell is a bit too hyperbolic for me. You may be correct that writing for Chew would be a worse fate, however. Cherryames, enjoy this Sidecar with me, so we can keep a side-eye out for news of GH’s future.

  15. Marian says:

Woohoo this news makes me so freaking happy. Guza has made GH suck and hopefully we will have good story lines to come with the new head writer. Maybe we can see Sonny and Carly back together and we can see Lisa Niles go bye-bye.

  16. GRATEFULDEAD714 says:

Can Spinelli and Brenda both leave the show via another limo bombing A.S.A.P.??????????????

    PLEASE?????????

  17. GRATEFULDEAD714 says:

watching those two on screen TRYING to act makes me want to vomit EVERY TIME I see them………….

    • The Gourmez says:

Luckily for you, Brenda is indeed on her way out! I think Spinelli’s sticking around for now, at least.

  18. gaga6789 says:

I think the story lines are horrible, too, but I wonder if Guza’s leaving is just the beginning of the end. Killing Jake? No reason for that. Having Luke be the one to do it? CRAZY! Having Luke be an alcoholic and stop drinking? STUPID! His crazy antics while drunk have been a staple of this show! Sonny’s kid being beat up by a boyfriend? UNBELIEVABLE! Carly and Jax splitting? POINTLESS! I hope it straightens up, but…wasn’t this the guy in charge when Luke “died” and sang “My Way”? Scary.

    • The Gourmez says:

Here’s a peach daiquiri for your comment! It’s very possible that losing Guza may just be the beginning of the end, but I’m very grateful someone else is at the helm, if that’s the case.

  19. Sara says:

Hmmmmm…this could be one of two things–a tell-tale sign of GH’s demise, as Guza seemed to be a pet of Frons. OR, and please let this be it, maybe Frons is giving GH one last chance under a different writer. I know, I know, just call me Pollyanna, but a girl can still dream…
I’ve started tuning into Y&R just to watch Tristan and Genie, as I miss the old days of GH so much.

  20. roger dickinson says:

Remember Guza is responsible for keeping GH alive for years–Go Guza
